Afi Backup for AWS Cloud

Afi SaaS backup for Amazon Web Services provides comprehensive protection for AWS EC2 instances, AWS PostgreSQL databases (RDS/Aurora), and Amazon RDS for SQL Server, including configuration and data.

Afi adopts multi-tenant organizational and access model tailored to enterprise use cases, complete with comprehensive audit for user and system activities as well as extensive monitoring capabilities. To offer granular access configuration as well as backup and data management features, Afi supports mass-management for AWS resources via default and dynamic groups.

EC2 backup and recovery

Afi provides backup for both EC2 instance configuration and data as well as recovery to a new instance with the same or custom configuration. Backup is based on the AWS recovery point technology, ensuring crash consistency for multi-disk configurations as well as application consistency for Windows applications that support VSS and file-level consistency for Linux instances.

During an instance backup, Afi creates a recovery point for the instance and then synchronizes the corresponding snapshot data to the Afi cloud. Recovery points are kept on the AWS side for 7 days to allow fast recovery from recent backup snapshots. To deliver fast and lightweight incremental backups, Afi backup for AWS relies on the cloud-native CBT (Changed Block Tracking) technology.

Database backup and recovery

Afi protects PostgreSQL and SQL Server databases on Single-AZ and Multi-AZ Amazon RDS instances. PostgreSQL protection also includes Multi-AZ RDS clusters and Aurora clusters.

Backups for both engines include AWS configuration, database schema, and table data, with strong consistency at the database level. You can browse backup configuration, schema, and table data, search table data by primary key and SQL scripts by keyword, export selected tables or search results as CSV, and download configuration files, SQL scripts, and complete database schemas.

For both PostgreSQL and SQL Server, you can recover a complete database with its schema and data into a new database, or restore selected tables with basic definitions and a name suffix, keeping existing production data intact.

Browse, search, and explore backup data

Afi offers a unique feature set for navigating and accessing backup data, simplifying day-to-day backup management for large and constantly evolving production infrastructures, including:

  • Detailed configuration preview for instances (including disk and network interface settings) and databases;
  • Ability to download instance or database configuration as AWS-native JSON;
  • Volume contents browse for supported volume configurations;
  • Ability to download selected files from inside a volume locally;
  • Ability to search across table data by primary key;
  • Ability to browse and preview SQL schema and table data as well as download selected SQL tables as CSV;
  • Ability to view instance and database configuration changes history;
  • Global search across all or a selected set of backups in a tenant that allows you to easily locate a backup by various properties (ID, name, tag, region, location);
  • Annotation labels highlighting resource configuration and database schema changes.

Monitoring, reliability, and support

As a SaaS backup solution, Afi takes a proactive approach to service reliability and resiliency by implementing continuous monitoring of service health and activities (e.g., backups, restores). Any issues detected by Afi’s monitoring system are proactively investigated and resolved, in most cases even before they are noticed or reported by account administrators.

Afi is resilient to AWS API errors and temporary throttling spikes, relieving account administrators of the need to constantly monitor the service or investigate transient backup issues.
