What's supported¶
Afi SaaS backup for Amazon Web Services provides comprehensive protection for AWS EC2 instances, PostgreSQL RDS/Aurora databases, and RDS for SQL Server instances, including configuration and data.
EC2 instances¶
EC2 instance types supported for backup¶
- Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X instances (both powered on or shut down)
- ARM64 and x86_64 instances
- Instances with SSD (General Purpose and Provisioned IOPS), HDD, and magnetic volumes. Volume encryption with AWS KMS keys is transparent for Afi and is fully supported.
Backup of instances with ephemeral or Multi-Attach volumes is not supported at the moment.
EC2 instance properties supported for recovery¶
Upon a recovery, Afi fully preserves the original instance configuration (by default), allowing you to override certain properties, if specified.
Currently, the following custom restore parameters are supported:
- Image ID (AMI)
- Instance profile name
- SSH key pair associated with the instance
- Subnet and security group configuration for the instance's network interfaces
- Encryption settings for the instance's volumes
Volume configurations supported for content preview¶
Volume content browsing is supported for both static (fixed) and dynamic LVM partition schemes, as well as for partitions formatted with EXT4, XFS, or NTFS file systems.
For LVM partition layout, only linear volumes are available for browsing. Striped and mirrored volumes are currently unsupported for volume content browsing, although support for these volumes is planned in upcoming service updates.
Limitations¶
Volume content browsing is not supported for:
- Striped and mirrored LVM (Logical Volume Manager) layouts for Linux and LDM (Logical Disk Manager) for Windows
Databases¶
Afi supports PostgreSQL and SQL Server databases on Amazon RDS, as well as Aurora PostgreSQL clusters. Supported major versions include:

Afi database backups capture the AWS configuration, database schema, and table data, with strong consistency at the database level. For both PostgreSQL and SQL Server backups, you can:
- Browse configuration, schema, and table data.
- Search table data by primary key value and SQL schema scripts by keyword.
- Export selected tables or table search results as CSV.
- Download configuration files, SQL scripts, and complete database schemas (PostgreSQL schema files or SQL Server DACPAC packages).
- Recover a complete database, including its schema and data, into a new database, or restore individual tables with basic table definitions.

SQL Server backups include user databases; SQL Server system databases and the AWS-managed rdsadmin database are excluded.
